Basic Home Exercise/The Plank

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Disclaimer: This video is for entertainment purposes only. Any attempt to replicate activities demonstrated on this video are at YOUR OWN RISK!

This is a basic demonstration of how to do a perfect plank. The perfect plank requires perfect posture. I have some hip flexor/glute imbalance, so even my posture here is not perfect. Most of my clients, especially men over the age of 25, generally have over-developed abdominal muscles and a weak back. Learning how to do this maneuver properly, and repeating it daily, can restore much of what is missing from perfect posture. HOWEVER… if you do this maneuver regularly, and IMPROPERLY, it will intensify bad posture.
If this is a new maneuver, I recommend you hire a professional to teach it to you properly, but having someone else nearby to correct form is almost essential until your motor cortex learns the proper form of it by repetition. In order to find neutral spine, a straight object (such as a broom stick) should be laid directly down the center of the back. It should only make contact at the lower back/waist line, between the shoulders, and the back of the head. And yes, I had my head out of proper alignment on this video, as it would be very difficult to speak with the head in proper position.
