If you had to buy one piece of fitness equipment for home use which one would it be?

I am not familiar with being fit or getting fit. I just want to buy one piece of equipment that will provide a good aerobic workout and possibly one piece that I can use for strengthening. Oh yes – trying to lose weight!

Well done for making the decision to improve your health a bit.
If I can be absolutely honest if you want to improve your fitness
There are 2 essential items
1. Proper FITTED running shoes, slow jogging combined with walking burns fat better than ANY other exercise. Forget pointless home health equipment, it’s just rubbish
2. A notebook to record both your progress and your diet (eat better and exercise more weight falls off, it’s that simple)

Start slowly and set yourself a series of realistic short term goals (eg run for 2 mins or run 1 mile or whatever) try to improve just a little each time but accept that sometimes you have a bad day.

Record ONE long term goal (run 10K perhaps)

Exercise is daunting at first but as soon as you experience the endorphines and begin to see improvements in your notebook and within yourself I’m sure you’ll love the confidence it gives you

Good luck and sorry if I’m going on a bit, I’m just quite passionate about helping people get fit. Let me know if I can help at all

An eliptical machine. No stress on the joints, smooth easy work out. If you have movable handles too, you work all your body parts nicely.

Walk up and down your staircase, this is very good exercise, at no cost (unless you live in a bungalow!). If you find it boring and tiring, then do not waste money on a piece of fitness equipment.

Skipping rope, gives an excellent aerobic workout, cheap and easy to store, not Nancy since boxers use them.
Strength I’d go for dumbbell with some different weights.

Nothing! Statistically 95% of all home fitness equipment sits dormant in houses. Use the money to join a gym.

You don’t need to buy anything, if you have stairs in your house, use them for aerobic work, and cans of beans or bottles of water make good weights, for strengthening. Power walking is an excellent way of burning fat, you can also use calisthetics exercises for strength work too. There are plenty of websites with exercise regimes on them, get looking. Good luck

Treadmill (running machine). Because it is the easiest way of losing weight, running. Other ways of losing weight, like having a diet may lose weight too quick and leave excess skin, so the treadmill is the easy way instead of jogging round the block.

treadmill. i have mine in the room my kids do their school lessons. i get on it when they are reading aloud. i might move it into my bedroom so i can get on it while watching t.v. the new t.v season. (watching Lost and "walking"…sounds good to me!) anyway you may have to see what works for you at a gym. go to a gym on a one day pass. and see which one you like best. i once thought i’d want a stairclimber. when i got on one at the gym (on a one day pass) i realized my knee was "hurt". i have a bad knee ! and i never knew it. i cant move it in certain way. so go to a gym and try all their machines and then make a educated choice.

I bought a Cross Trainer and this really works, it more or less excercises every part of your body. It is very hard to start with but once you are on it about 10 – 15 minutes a day it does get easier. I lost 4 and a half stone within 6 months, how i done this was with the regular excercise and eating a breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Before this I could go 2 -3 days without eating all i had was about 3 litres of normal irn-bru a day. That’s not good for you

    Hope this info helps you

The best thing you can buy for aerobic workout is a treadmill, pref one that you can alter the incline on. You can walk, jog or sprint and a good machine will be able to calculate your max heart rate, calories burned and distance covered – useful if you’re embarking on a fitness programme. For strengthening, you could invest in a set of dumbbells and maybe aresistance band to work your lower body.

elliptical machine. you get a work-out comparable to running but it’s easier on your joints (lower-impact). i got a used one for $80 on http://www.craigslist.com. It’s good to combine regular cardio with regular stretching/weights . . . cheap additions to your home gym would be an exercise ball for stretching and crunches ($30 at Target), small dumb-bells for your arms (less than $10 each, Target, Academy), thigh-master ($20ish). books about good stretches and regular weight workouts at the library.

    good luck
