Weider Platinum v. Bowflex?

Friday, April 9th, 2010

I’ve been working out for about 3 y. I want a home gym just to stay in shape and tone. Any thoughts on a Bowflex v. a Weider platinum? What have your results been like? One is electrically set for weight?!?!?!, but on the other hand I’m concerned about the Bowflex rods breaking as I will use it at least 3x/week and will likely max out the weight. THANKS

My wife and I bought the bowflex sport at the end of december, and we have been very happy with it. We looked at weider, but it didn’t seem to be quite as reliable or could do all of the exercises we wanted. With the bowflex sport, we can simulate 95% of the exercises we’d get at the gym, and it’s really quite easy to change between the different modes. In addition, although it’s not crucial, I felt that the software that was included was absolutely fantastic. It breaks down meals and workout routines, and shows you how to do them. Also, I was concerned about breaking or at least wearing down those rods (I’m an engineer), but they hold up real well. I did a quick search on the reliability, and I found that very few people returned the rods. If you go with a bowflex, just remember to disengage the rods after you’re done working out, this way they retain as much of their resistance as possible. Also, with maxing out the weight, you can upgrade the standard 210 pound resistance to 310 or 410. Currently, we have ours at 310, but are looking to upgrade.

The only bad thing with the bowflex sport was that setup took forever. They say it will only take you 2 hours. Trust me, unless you know exactly what you’re doing, it will take you twice that. However, after setup is complete you have a great machine that needs very little in the way of maintenece.

Also, one final point: If you go with a bowflex, I would shoot for the one we got, the sport. It really works well for us for more than just toning. The new version of the Sport (Blaze) is exactly the same except for a little bag behind the main column, and it costs about $200-400 more.

moving a home gym, need help!?

Monday, April 5th, 2010

my neighbors sold me a their home gym (weider pro 9930) and i have to move it down the street. any ideas on the best way to move this, preferably not hiring a professional

*take it all apart..take it in pieces..WHO KNOWS!

Hopefully who you purchased this from still has the instructions on how it goes together. If not you really need to take allot of photos of it before you start taking it apart and even photos of the parts and what you took off so you can hopefully put it back together if you need to take it apart.

As far as the moving. I would gather up some of the neighbor’s teens with strong backs and weak minds to see if they would help you providing you order them a pizza with all the soda they can drink :)

A question about a posture problem?

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

I’m 25 years old and male. I started doing pushups and lifting weights when I was about 14 years old. I used to sit and still do sit with very poor posture in sort of a hunch back when I am sitting (an extremely bad habit that I constantly catch myself doing). Especially when it’s just like a bench with no back support at all, like a chair has. Trying to sit up as straight as I can seems to involve more of my lower back. I can feel it in my lower back (sort of a ‘pull’ of the muscles working to help me sit up straighter) when I try to sit up straight with proper posture. Even then, it’s kind of hard. I can back up straight against a wall, and the first thing that touches against the wall are the back of the arm/shoulder(?) bones in the upper-middle area of my back. When I turn sideways and look in the mirror, these bones stick out and give sort of a ‘hunched back’ look. I’ve read where a lot of people have said this is caused by too many push exercises and not enough pull exercises. However, nobody ever seems to address how to fix it – they just state that it "can be fixed by strengthening the weaker muscles." Apparently a lot of bodybuilders deal with this at some point. My shoulders definitely seem to be too far forward and don’t quite ‘line up’ straight with the rest of my body, like they should.

I use a home gym (Weider Crossbar Max or something like that) that is supposed to be able to do nearly every gym exercise. It’s a cable machine, and using free weights are not an option right now. What exercises can I do to correct this? I’ve also heard about some doctors having people get into weight lifting to fix such problems and other back problems. So, if you don’t know…please do not start on the rant of "Go see a chiropractor" or any other lame answer like that. They would say the same thing and would recommend strengthening the muscles.

So…which muscles specifically do I need to work on, and what exercises need to be done – is what I am trying to find out.
Also, it seems like other people can sit in the most uncomfortable positions…yet they automatically seem to manage to sit "straight" regardless. For me, it takes work to do so…

I think you should go to a gym and ask a trainer specifically to tell you what exercises you need to do and advice about the situation with your back.

Do home gyms have bench press?

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

I am thinking about purchasing a home gym such as the body solid exm 2500s or the weider 9635 and they both say they have a bench press feature. I don’t really know too much about home gym but in the pictures I dont see a barbell or anything to bench press. Does it like use the pulley system in a way similar to the bench press or does it mean you have to purchase a barbell and weights to use it or what?

It most probably comes with the barbell rest but you may need to buy the bar and the weights separately. When you purchase it, its a good idea to double check with the supplier.

What kind of routine should I be doing with my weight machine?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

I bought a home gym type machine on a sale a while back. It’s an older Weider Pro which uses the cables and weights. It didn’t come with any manuals or literature. So I was wondering how many sets/reps of each part of the machine to do and when to add weight. Also how much weight is a good starting point?

3 sets 10-12 reps is a good start. do light weight at first to build a muscular base. Then when the weight gets too light then you should increase usaully every 3-4 weeks

Best brand of fitness equipment…?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

I’m looking to set up a home gym in my basement, but I have no idea what the best brands are. I’m thinking about getting a universal set, plus a treadmill. I’ve seen lots of "Weider" home gyms on craigslist but one of my friends at the gym told me to avoid that brand at all costs. He did recommend "Bowflex". Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Lifefitness my my favorite kind of home gym equipment.
